Pet desexing

Desexing is a simple step that makes a big difference in your pet’s health and happiness!

Desexing your pet offers more than just preventing unwanted litters — it can lead to a longer, healthier life. It reduces the risk of certain cancers and infections, lowers the chance of roaming and aggression, and can even help with behavioural issues. What to Expect on the Day of Spay/Neuter Surgery

To help you and your pet have a smooth and safe experience, here’s what to expect on the day of their procedure at Newton Vet Centre:

⚠️ Fasting Instructions

  • Adult pets must fast for 8–12 hours prior to surgery.

  • Please feed dinner as normal the evening before, but ensure all food is removed by 9:00 PM.

  • Water does not need to be withheld and can be left out overnight.

🕘 Admission Time

  • Drop-off is from 9:00 AM.

  • A quick 10-minute check-in with one of our friendly nurses will take place to review your pet’s procedure and have the surgical consent form signed.

  • After check-in, your pet will remain with our team for pre-surgical care and monitoring.

🩺 Before Surgery

Procedures usually commence around 11:00 AM. In the meantime, your pet will receive:

  • A full pre-surgical physical examination

  • A pre-medication injection to help them stay calm and comfortable

  • Placement of an IV catheter for the safe delivery of fluids and medications throughout the procedure

🚶 Bringing Your Pet In

  • Cats must be transported in a secure, well-ventilated carrier.

  • Dogs must be on a leash with a collar or harness.

  • Don’t forget to bring:

    • Your pet’s vaccination records

    • Any relevant medical documents or notes from other vets

🏡 Discharge & Aftercare

  • Most pets are ready to go home later the same day, once they’ve fully recovered from anesthesia.

  • At discharge, we will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions and answer any questions you may have.
