Microchipping Your Pet

Microchipping is one of the most effective ways to protect your pet if they ever become lost. At Newton Veterinary Centre, we offer quick, safe microchipping that provides lifelong peace of mind.

What Is Microchipping?

A microchip is a tiny implant (about the size of a grain of rice) placed under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique ID number that links to your contact details in a national registry.

The procedure is quick, no more painful than a vaccination, and only needs to be done once.

Why Is It Important?

  • ✔️ Required by law in most Australian states

  • 🏠 Helps reunite lost pets with their families

  • 🐕 Permanent identification – unlike tags or collars

  • 📋 Often needed for council registration (DACO)

If your pet is found, any vet, shelter, or council can scan their microchip and contact you—but only if your details are up to date.

When Should I Microchip My Pet?

We recommend microchipping puppies and kittens from 6–12 weeks of age, or at the same time as desexing. Adult pets can be microchipped at any time.

👉 Note: Many breeders microchip puppies before sale. If you’ve recently brought home a new pet, it’s important to check that the microchip is registered in your name and that your contact details are up to date.

We Register In-Clinic Microchips for You

When we perform the microchipping, we’ll submit the initial registration on your behalf. You’ll also receive instructions on how to access and manage your pet’s details online.

If your pet was microchipped elsewhere (e.g. by a breeder or another clinic), we can help you check the registration and guide you through updating or transferring ownership if needed.

How to Keep Details Updated

It’s essential to keep your contact details current with the registry. If you’ve moved house or changed phone numbers, don’t forget to update your pet’s microchip record.
